When is Ramadan 2022? Dates and how Shah Jahan Mosque will welcome people for prayer
This year's Ramadan will be the first in three years where there are no restrictions on Surrey's Muslims being able to join together for evening prayers. After two years where Covid restrictions meant people were either unable to attend mosques, or there were restrictions on numbers and the length of prayers, 2022 presents some normality for the likes of Shah Jahan in Woking.
Celebrated by over a billion people globally, Ramadan takes place for a month, on a date that has not yet been finalized for this year. While for many, Ramadan will begin around the evening of Saturday, April 2, and end on Sunday, May 1, the date will not be known until just beforehand.
It may start on April 2 or 3 this year, depending on moon sightings, and as such is at a different time on the Gregorian calendar each year. Ramadan 2021 started closer to mid-April, while 10 years ago, it started in the latter half of July.

Ramadan in 2022
Imam Hafiz M Saeed Hashmi, head Imam with Woking's Shah Jahan Mosque and vice-chairman of the Surrey Muslim Association, says that the first UK Government restriction-free Ramadan comes as a welcome return for Muslim communities in Surrey as it does across the country.
With the festival's themes of self-purification and thinking of others, the mosque is one of many places of worship up and down the country that has been collecting donations in aid of Ukraine this year. Victims of the conflict and people facing conflict around the world will be among those the mosque's community will be thinking about this year.
Imam Hashmi says: "Last two years, it was very difficult for the churches, for the synagogues, for all faith communities. In [Ramadan 2020, which lasted from around the evening of April 23-May 23], we were totally closed, and I personally, with my children, was leading the prayers with my family within my bubble.
"Last year, 2021, the mosque was partially opened, we were not doing longer prayers, and we were maintaining social distancing. Under all the government legal rules and guidelines, we were open, but it was not normal."
With restrictions easing throughout the months of the second half of Ramadan 2021, they started offering free meals for the community to take away. They're not completely forgetting the Covid threat – they still ask people to stay at home if they are having Covid symptoms or testing positive.
But Imam Hashmi says: "We are looking forward to observing Ramadan, the community's very excited. With the break of two years, this is the first year where we are going to encourage people, please come and pray at evening prayer."
Ramadan 2022: When is Ramadan 2022, Ramadan dates 2022, and why Muslims celebrate the Islamic holiday
The holy month of Ramadan is the first celebration on the Islamic calendar.
It marks a four-week period of fasting for Muslims around the world.
However, it doesn’t fall on the same dates every year.
Here’s how the dates of Ramadan are calculated and the origins of the holiday.
Origins of Ramadan as a Muslim holiday
Muslims are required to spend a period of 30 days abstaining from food and drink, including water, during daylight hours, as a means of celebrating and reflecting on their faith.
It is one of the five pillars of Islam - the fundamental rules that all Muslims follow - along with the Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity), and the Hajj pilgrimage.
During Ramadan, there is an increased offering of the Salat, with Muslims giving thanks to Allah, while the fasting ritual allows them to understand the suffering of others.
Those observing the fast are encouraged to read the Quran and the holy text is recited at the Tarawih, special nightly prayers that are held throughout the month.
All Muslims who have reached puberty are expected to fast during Ramadan, although there are some exceptions, including women who are menstruating or pregnant, and those suffering from illness.
The strict rules mean food and drink, including water, are not allowed during daylight hours for the entire month, while smoking, sex, and masturbation are also prohibited.
The fast begins just before dawn when a light meal called ‘suhoor’ is permitted to be consumed. At sunset, a prayer is known as ‘Adhan’ signifies the end of the fast, when worshippers traditionally eat dates with juice, milk, or water.
To break the fast fully at the end of the month, families usually come together to enjoy the meal of Iftar.
Once fasting is over, it’s traditional to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
This celebration is marked with lights, decorations, and gifts, with worshippers often dressing up and decorating their homes.
